Breed Information, History and Standards

This page will provide links and articles about the history of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog. It will also provide links to the differing breed standards of the Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Kangal Dog and Kangal (Karabash) Dog. Our goal is to provide as much information as possible, as a resource to our visitors. The information provided in the variuos links, will cover varying points of view about a breed (or breeds, as the case may be) of dog that has basically been performing the same function, for over 6,000 years.

The United Kennel Club has included the Anatolian Shepherd Dog in its Guardian Dog Group. The following link is to the Breed Standard as adopted by the United Kennel Club, January 1, 1993 (Revised April 1, 1998):

The American Kennel Club has included the Anatolian Shepherd Dog in its Working Dog Group. The following link is to the Breed Standard which was approved by the American Kennel Club in June, 1995 and became effective June 1, 1996:

The United Kennel Club began recognizing the Kangal Dog as a separate breed, in 1998. The Kangal Dog is also in the Guardian Dog Group. The following link is to the Kangal Dog Breed Standard as adopted by the United Kennel Club:

The Turkish Kennel Club was formed in 2001. The following link is to the Kangal Dog Breed Standard which was approved published by the Turkish Kennel Club in Turkey, at the Second International Kangal Dog Symposium in July, 2005.
